Failover pair over distance

I am running 5000 series hardware and am wondering if you can run the RJ45 failover cable through a switch? I have separated my hardware by about 5 miles and wondering if you can just setup a VLAN on a switch ring and provide that hardware cables connection in 2 locations? Or does it have to be local? Thanks Joe

  • it has just to be a switched network, have a customer with its own DWDM between their Datacentres which result in a Layer 2 Connectivity over 110 Kilometers.

but please make a little bond of two links over a redundent switched network. Also configure not only one Sync Network instead of the best practise of 2 Networks. Also configure directly the mirroring addresses etc.

    if not done already

  • Are you talking about the hardware failover port, or network failover using one of the TMM switchports?

The hardware failover port is just a voltage, and would not be something you can simply plug into a switch. It is limited to a 50-foot distance.

Network failover is a heartbeat sent via IP and can be treated as any other network traffic. Depending on network conditions you may need to tune the timeout value (default = 3 seconds)...but 3 seconds is, relatively speaking, a long time. Just consider your overall HA strategy.
