Enterprise Manager 3.1.1 SMTP Test

I just upgraded our EM from 2.3 to 3.1.1 and I notice the SMTP configuration seems to have changed. How can I test the configuration in place? Is it still with echo "test" | mail ? That is returning an error for me "send-mail: Invalid response SMTP server"

    SMTP support was modified to support enhanced functionality, which might require additional configuration.

     

    Configure your SMTP server(s) under System -> Configuration -> Device -> SMTP

     

    Then go to Enterprise Management -> Options -> Servers to make sure the correct SMTP Server configuration is selected for Enterprise Manager to use.
