Delegation of a Subdomain from a GTM to Third party Vendor DNS Server
Hi, We have deployed GTM in our Network as a DNS server , now we have a requirement to delegate a subdomain to a thirdparty vendor. Kindly advise whether this is possible in GTM and if yes how we can do that ? As per my understanding we can do this and this can be done by below method: 1. Create NS records for submdomain under Zonerunner (eg. mysubdoamin.maindomain.com NS thirdparty.ns.maindomain.com) 2. Then create A record under zonerunner (eg. thirdparty.ns.maindomain.com A
Please validate this understanding and please also share if I have missed anything here or anything I need to take care about for this configuration.

Hi Uma,
That should do the job but would be a bit inflexible if your 3rd party were to change the IP address of their name server.
You could always use the real names of the 3rd party name servers in the delegation, or if you really want to use thirdparty.ns.maindomain.com create a CNAME record to point thirdparty.ns.maindomain.com to the 3rd party name servers.

Thanks a ton Stewart for your kind advise. Just to update you our third party vendor has asked to do delegation of subdomain only and this is as per project requirement , however I will remeber these options for any future requirement.

Hi Stewart, Kindly advise how can I verify that this is implemented succesfully ? Please also advise whether I also require my third party vendor to be on call to verify this

Once, you've done the delegation you can use dig or nslookup to check that it's all in place.
The impact will be that the sub domain will now be under the administration of the 3rd party's DNS admins.

Thanks Stewart, Is it possible to have some controls over this subdomain ? How do we know what Aliases or host names get created under this sub domain ? and what controls do we exert on Third Party to what gets created

Hi Uma,
The point of delegation is that it allows you to give administrative contorl over a sub-domain to another DNS servers administrators.
If you want absolute control over the sub-domain you should not delegate it to the 3rd party.
