Creating Nodes - Need info

Hi Aaron/All

This is basically an elementary question , but couldnt find it explicitly explained in the docs. Im trying to better understand the creation of Nodes.

Q1) When we create a new pool and specify the new address for the member pool , are the nodes automatically created ?If not, then do they need to be explicitly created first ? Im wondering how Nodes are assigned names like 170.25.186.4%1,170.25.186.5%2, etc.

Q2) When creating a pool , Whats the difference/impact between choosing new address and existing Node List.

regards,

Nik

  • Hi Nik,

Here are answers to your qs,

Q1) When we create a new pool and specify the new address for the member pool , are the nodes automatically created ?If not, then do they need to be explicitly created first ? Im wondering how Nodes are assigned names like 170.25.186.4%1,170.25.186.5%2, etc.

Ans: When you create a pool and you enter the pool members they are automatically added in the nodes list.

Q2) When creating a pool , Whats the difference/impact between choosing new address and existing Node List.

Ans: If you want to create the pool with the members having IP already in the node list you select "existing Node List" so you dont have to enter those IP's again. When you have to include the new IP's as the pool members then u select new address.

I hope this answers your concerns...

    Regards,

  •

OK , one more clarification ,

By Entering pool members you mean entering the VIP (Virtual IP address) of the webservers right ?

    regards,

    Nik
  • It's important to note the difference between a Node vs a Member, and might help you understand the creatin process..

A "node" is global, a "member" is only specific to the respective pool it's created in.. ie, you can have the same host be a part of multiple pools.. This comes into play at a few different points, but namely from the perspective of the LB method for the pool.. For example, least connections (node) is going to factor in all the connections for that host globally, vs Least connections (member) is only going to factor in the connections for that pool it's a part of..
  • Hi Nik,

Entering the pool members does not mean entering the VIP of the webserver.... you have to understand the concept Pool is just a container of different computers which are going to serve one service for example.... when you type www.f5.com this resolves into a public IP lets say... 212.12.11.13 now this public IP can be the VS Visually how it goes is like this...

    (User)-----(Internet)------(Virtual server)----- (Pool for HTTP) ------(Member1=172.16.1.1) (Member2=172.16.1.2) (Member3=172.16.1.3)

    ^ ^ ^ ^

User on internet Requested service Virtual server Load balances the connection over the members of pool

or Local LAN resolves into this IP refers to its pool

I hope this answers your qs...

    Regards,
  •

Thanks Techgeeg for your detailed explanation. But who will give me the the pool member IP address to enter here ? Do i need to ask the network guys to create a e.g. pool members and let me know the IP address?

    regards,
  • Hi Nik,

It depends environment to environment who is taking care of notes is it network administator or system administrator...
