BIG-IP LTM Web-Server Autodiscovery

Hi,

We will like to use F5 BIG-IP LTM and we will like to know if F5 BIG-IP has any feature to discover if for example a new web server has been added. We have a Web Server VLAN and if we add a new member in the VLAN, will the F5 BIG-IP LTM be able to automatically detect it and start to send traffic to it?

Thanks a lot.

REgards,

  • i am not aware of it. i think ltm won't send traffic to new server unless configuration has been per-configured.

  • Thanks Nitass for the answer. Would be a valid solution then to configure all the IPs of the Webserver VLAN as a possible web-server IP. The F5 will notice that the majority of IPs are down and when I will connect a new Web server, a new IP will be reachable and the F5 will start to send traffic to it? It is this a recommended configuration or it is too risky for security reasons?

    Thanks a lot.

yes, it is. it is done by using health monitor.

  • That could work but does feel a bit risky from a security viewpoint. Why are things so dynamic? Could you not use iControl to add and remove pool members as part of the server provisioning process?

Are the new web servers always part of the same pool serving up the same content as all of the other others?
