I opened a case with F5 Support about this very issue in January 2014. Here is the answer I got then and I believe nothing has changed since:

 

Answer From F5 Support: We have linked this issue with bug ID412863. The workaround is to create each VS as a generic server and monitor them using HTTP/TCP/ICMP/etc monitors using the fact that only the active box for a traffic group will answer monitor request. Basically the GTM is not currently ready for more than a 2 unit failover pair of LTM devices
