Nimbostratusfailover?
Am I allowed to set the failover status to 'active' on a 'standby' box. Or
can only the active unit mark itself standby?

- The BIG-IP kernel failover implementation does not allow flipping the standby unit to active. The active unit must be set to standby to force a failover.
