What exactly does L3 address (Load-balancing method) do?

I read the configuration guide for LTM manual, and see the L3 address (Load-balancing method). There is just a short description of this method. Would some one give me more in depth of what does it do exactly? Please. Thanks,

L3 Address load-balancing was introduced with the intention of being good for systems with trunks. Basically, it tries to choose a "compatible" (meaning "likely to cause trunks to be evenly loaded") pool member based on L3 connection information.

Unfortunately, this load-balancing mode does not do what it was designed to do in the face of VIPRION and other CMP/clustering changes made since then, and is planned to be removed in the future.
