WebAccelerator and ASM

Hey All,

I was told to day that we are going to buy WebAccelerator, and I want to make sure we approach it properly. We are currently running LTM and ASM on 6800s and my Architechure team wants to utilize the same platform. I do however recall that WA and ASM do not play nice, which seems to jive with the fact that they both utilizes classes to function, but I cannot find this written anywhere. Can someone confirm that ASM and WA connot be used on the same VIP? I assume our only option would be to implement this as a stand alone box infront of or behind the ASM/LTM boxes. Is there a prefered way to implement this combination of boxes?

Sorry for so many questions, but they want to make a purchase asap and I don't want to make the wrong choices.

  • It's not so much that they don't play nice together it's that currently they can not run on the same system. You can either license and activate ASM or WA but not both. Right now you are correct that the solution is to implement a stand-alone behind/in-front of the current LTM/ASM system.

Thanks for confirming that. It doesn't seem like there would be, but is there any advantage to installing the standalone WA in front of or behind the LTM/ASM box?
  • That's a very theoretical question, and unfortunately there are differing opinions. There are schools of thought that would propose WA in front and others that propose it behind. From my perspective WA should be "in front" of ASM. This configuration provides offload of requests going to ASM and better performance.
  • The ability to run WA and ASM on the same system and the same virtual at the same time will be in the next release. You currently can run LTM caching and compression at the same time as ASM.

dparzych is correct that generally it is best to have WA "in front" of ASM.

  • Hi,

No, not yet. This is due to be in the 10.0.0 release. You can find out a little more detail on the beta site (beta.f5.com).

    Hope this helps,
