Using F5 to Load balance Azure SQL Servers

Has anyone load balanced two SQL databases hosted in Azure SQL service? I'm unable to get the MSSQL health monitor to show as healthy, and I think it is because the F5 is not connecting to the Azure SQL service via a supported method. Is there any documentation on how it establishes connections? JDBC, ODBC, ADO? How does it configure connection strings?
