tacacs health monitoring

Has anyone setup a health monitor using ltm to monitor whether tacacs is up or not? I simple tcp monitor doesn't work. I have read somewhere you could use a tcp monitor with a hex send / receive string? Anyone that has some examples of what they are using would be greatly appreciated.
