Strange High Availability Behaviour

Hi,

We have two BIGIP 3600s which have 11.2.1 HF5 software running. We've configured them as Active-Standby pair. I've noticed a strange behaviour of the operation of the devices. The Standby device is handling the traffic of one virtual-server and the Active device is handling the rest. I double checked the HA configuration and everything is identical except Self-IPs. I've forced the Active device to Standby and same thing occured again. What may be the reason for this result?

  • Do you have connection mirroring enabled for the virtual server that isn't behaving like the others? That can make it look like the Standby is processing traffic - because it is, but just to update connection table, state, etc.
  • I just checked all Virtual-Servers and I am sure that connection mirroring is not enabled. Also, I've started tcpdump on both devices and observing them now. For now Standby is processing all traffic. I can see "adress conflict detected" for virtual-server IPs on both devices' /var/log/ltm files.
  • Are you seeing SOD or CMI or messages in /var/log/ltm? It appears the units are going Active-Active.
  • At first we had a configuration problem so we received several SOD or CMI logs but after fixing the config and implementing Active-Standby, they stopped. However, Standby is still processing VS traffic.
