software upgrade with VCMP guests

Hello Guys, Need your opinion and assistance on the following requirement.

Currently we have one BIGIP-LTM 5250 running with two VCMP guest with following software versions respectively. VCMP host :- BIG-IP 11.5.3 Build 0.0.163 Final VCMP Guests :- BIG-IP 11.6.0 Build 0.0.401 Final As can see both are running different software version so we are planning to upgrade the software code however before this we have the same standby appliance which is not in production so we want that to put in production for HA .

So here are my queries :- 1- Only do HA for VCMP guest not host so do I need to the HA config in each VCMP guest independently ? 2- Do we need any downtime when configuring HA ?

3- Which software code we should upgrade and how to perform zero downtime upgrade if we have HA running please explain ?

  • Hi,

You need to configure ha only vcmp only not require anything on host, ther is down time as ypu need to add peer device..

Dow time should not take much time, most 2-5 min max.. Do upgrade host first and them follow the vcmp.

    Thx Srini

K14088: vCMP host and compatible guest version matrix https://support.f5.com/csp/article/K14088

Currently supported versions are: 13.1.0.2, 12.1.3 Final, 11.6.3 Final, 11.5.5 Final You can choose any which best suits your business needs. You can find more information regarding releases on askf5.com

HA is not supported on vCMP hosts, it has to be standalone device. You can configure HA only on guests.

If everything goes fine then service outage should be less then one min while HA fails over the active unit. However guest down time depend on configuration and may take around 10 min. Host down time depend on version you are gong to. Host upgrade may reboot device several times thou increasing downtime of the host to ~15-20 min.

Start with standby box. After it is up and running, failover HA and make box with new software active. Upgrade other box

Detailed steps can be found on askf5.com

  • Yes. Both the devices Active/Standby will be out of sync until you upgrade the active F5.

On the functionality standby there will not be any issue.

ok then how will I switch the traffic from active unit to standby unit which has been upgraded ?

  • Follow the instructions given below in order to make the active as standby:-

Device management -> Devices -> select the active one -> from the bottom select - force to standby.

You can also do it from Device management -> Traffic groups -> select the traffic group (considering you have only one in this case) -> select force to standby
