Mar 03, 2012snapshot facility on LTM
Hi everyone,
Many of you must have used F5 Firepass, there was a facility of taking a system snapshoot in Firepass. This facility was really helpful in case if the system upgradation fails or if the system faces any crash it can be recovered from the previous snap shot.
Here in LTM do we have any such facility to take the system snapshoot before upgrading the system so that in case of any failure we can restore the system to the previously running status.
Any comments or suggestions....

That's what a backup is for really. However if you're doing upgrades the normal procedure is to install to a separate partition/Volume. So a rollback is as simple as a switchboot -b and a reboot.
Assuming you have an LTM (Even one with no config) you can produce a copy of another by setting the hostname and restoring the config.

Hi Hamish,
Here I am not talking of the configuration backup. If you have used the product of F5 called as Firepass it has this feature that can take the complete system snapshot and in case of any failure the system can be gained back on the saved snapshot. Any suggestions ??????

I'd guess Techgeeg is looking for the ability to create an exact image of the installation slot including the OS and configuration. That's not really possible in current LTM versions on physical platforms. For VE, you could use the Hypervisor's snapshot functionality to do this. Else for physical units, you can create an additional slot and install a UCS backup there.

Ah.. Like aix's mksysb utility... Actually that would be quite useful... I wrote a script for powerpc linux way way back that did this... I wonder if i can findit and update to workmon an LTM.

Exactly guys this is what I am looking for... to take the complete image along with OS n configuration. Is there a change to have such thing avaliable on LTM units... ? - hoolio

From 9.4.2 - 9.4.8 LTM had the snapshot utility which basically created an image of the OS and config for a single slot. I'm not sure why, but it was removed from the product in 10.0:
sol10217: BIG-IP version 10.x does not contain the snapshot utility

You could make a request for enhancement with F5 Support, but I think you'll just get the recommendation to use a second slot and a UCS file or the cpcfg utility.

This is a very useful tool and should be part of this latest TMOS Version.
Also can some one tell me how to set the LTM box to the factory default???? No matter the most smart or the most stupid hardware today in the market has a button to send the equipment to factory default or to boot it in some sort of recovery mode or atleast set the IP address/user-id/password to the factory default. I don't find it in any of the F5 LTM series what is the logic behind it can any one tell me...
