Nov 28, 2012Service Check Monitors
Hi Experts,
Say if a monitor monitor_http is defined to check port 80 is running on the pool http_pool, and if the monitor is associated with the http_pool, how does bigip check the status of port 80 on the pool members?
Does it do telnet to the port 80 at every set interval? or how?
thanks-gseek

What type of monitor is it please? tcp, tcp_half_open or http? - nathe

genseek,
If it's a http monitor type then it'll do a tcp 3 way handshake on the port and then send a http request using the configured send string. I think the default is just a plain Get request. As long as the F5 receives something back then the pool member is considered Up. You can, of course, set a Receive String to determine what it should expect and assign the member up or down accordingly. The interval is also specified in the monitor settings.
As Steve mentions, it'll work differently depending on monitor type.
