Here are a couple f5 documents (" target="_blank">route domains, " target="_blank">partitions) on the subjects that you might find useful. One use case might be to use route domains with VMWares " target="_blank">Site Recovery Manager. The noted guide is a little old, but the process is the part you might be interested in reading.

I have a similar question. The docs describe how to configure a route domain, but there is no mention of practical application or why this feature exists. In my configuration we share a single LTM with many different application environments. Can a route domain be used to further subdivide this shared environment? - iray_171308
