Routing Decision

Hi,

I recently encountered an issue with management traffic of our LTM's that we look after for a client. All of our managed devices are monitored from various management networks that we connect to. To avoid any addressing conflicts with clients, all of our management networks are from a registered public address space.

When sending ICMP echo requests from our management network to the management interface of an LTM (whose IP address is in a private address space) the ICMP echo reply was being sent out of an interface owned by TMM that had a default route associated to it. Yes, Auto Last Hop was enabled.

I have solved the problem however, thanks to this article ;

I do have an outstanding question if anyone is able to shed light on this.

I was able to manage the LTM from any privatly addressed network, it appeared however that as soon as I attempted this from a publicly addressed network is when it failed.

What determines that default route in the management route table is no good, and instead to use the default route in the "main" table but only for public address space?

Any clarity would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Evan.
