Requirements to connect to local VIP

What are the network requirements / limitations for the local system to use a VIP it is hosting itself as its own DNS server in a FQDN based LTM node?

I'm struggling to see the exact scenarios where I can and cannot connect to a VIP in this instance. It doesn't seem to matter if a VIP is set to only listen on certain VLANs, it doesn't seem to need to be on a locally connected subnet. Is it platform dependent? Classic BigIP vs Viprion? In some situations it works, in others it doesn't.
