Multiple GTM Sync groups

We currently have a few old LTMs in a sync group running GTM version 10. We have bought new GTMs and installed version 11.

Is it possible to have ltms associated with multiple GTM sync groups ? When I first tried to bigip_add on one of the new GTMs with synchronization off, I was getting errors in the LTM log that indicated an issue. A quick google told me the error is due to having version 11 and 10 in the same sync group. So with sync still off on this GTM, i updated the sync group name, and the errors stopped.

My issue now is that the GTM is not discovering virtual servers on the LTMs even though the LTMs added and are green.

Ideas ?

Hi, it seems somewhat of a version matching game. It appears to me you can achieve the same LTM existing in multiple sync groups if the LTM has the same or higher version of big3d than the GTM. SOL13703 on support.f5.com has some basic rules of thumb for big3d version management:

    http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/13000/700/sol13703.html?sr=33556722

  • That was actually going to be my next questions, but I was trying to find the answer on the support site first, as to whether or not allowing the newer GTM to update the big3d version on the LTMs would break the LTMs functionality with the old GTMs.

    Thanks for the help.

  • I actually have a newer LTM running the same version

    big3d version big3d Version 11.2.1.1196.0 for linux

And even the newer ltm, the auto discovery of virtual servers is not working on the version 11 gtm.

Well at least the version issue has been ruled out. Did you check for any auto discover issues? Here are a few:

    http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/13000/800/sol13899.html

    http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/9000/100/sol9138.html

  • Yeah, I've looked up numerous issues with auto discovery, including the two you have listed there. and none seem to apply.

Though I do think it's going to end up being something with synchronization. If I change the sync group name to the same as the gtms that are working, i will get errors for sync in the log due to the version mismatch. change the name, errors go away. and if i run an iqdump against one of the LTMs and can see everything. It just fails to auto discover vips on the ltms

Hi, from the details here, it appears to be this issue:

    http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/13000/800/sol13899.html

The details I would consider applicable:

    1) The GTM was in and out of sync group

    2) It is running version 11 (though I'm not sure which version)

There are a few additional considerations from:

    http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/13000/900/sol13994.html?sr=33649694

The BIG-IP GTM configuration must contain one or more BIG-IP server objects

TCP port 4353 is allowed between the BIG-IP GTM and target BIG-IP systems

The target BIG-IP system's virtual server addresses must not employ network address translation.
