Migrating Physical LTM to VE with SCF file
Hello,
I am planning an upgrade of our current 2 BIG-IP 3900s running 11.6 to a new VE pair running 12.3. I am thinking an SCF file might be the easiest way to complete the migration so I can keep IPs and everything the same and migrate straight to the new version. My question is what configuration needs/should be done on the appliances before loading the SCF file. Im assuming just config a management IP and then load the SCF? Or do the interfaces in the SCF need to be modified at all to match the new platform before being loaded?

SCF will already have the management IP. So you need not worry about that unless you want a different IP address.
As long as interface configuration is concerned, i believe you would have to edit to meet your requirement in the VE.

The easiest solution is not scf if you plan to migrate version.
Scf commands may change between versions.
The easiest solution is now (starting version 12.1.3) to create a ucs file and follow this article.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like going with UCS file is best route to take. I have one question on the management IP. Would it be best to not include the management IP of the old device in the UCS file in case I ever have to switch back to the old system?
Otherwise Ill try this in our dev environment and see how the process goes. In dev we are running a VE already, could the same basic steps be used to migrate from VE to VE as well?

You can’t choose to include or not management ip in UCS!
Upload the ucs file on the new appliance, load it offline according to the article, change the management ip before plug in to network!
