License upgrade (F5-ADD-BIG-2200S) in HA active/standby BIG-IP

Hi community,

We run a pair of BIG-IP 2000 in an active/standby HA setup. To increase capacity we bought a license upgrade to BIG-IP 2200 (F5-ADD-BIG-2200S).

Can anyone tell me if there is an interruption in traffic processing while doing the license upgrade?

My plan is to:

  • perform UCS backup of both systems
  • upgrade the standby system first
  • check status
  • failover the traffic group to the standby system
  • check again
  • then perform the upgrade on the other node
  • failover the traffic group again
  • check again

Support told me that there is no guarantee that there will not be any traffic disruption...

Thanks for any help on this.

Stephan

  • Thanks, I'll try it that way by taking one node offline for the license installation.

  • If your doing the standby 1st there should not be an interruption, I would force it offline while doing the upgrade and after the upgrade/checkout then release it from offline and then do your failover. When you failover is when you might impact some connections but that depends on your implementation.
