May 05, 2010LED's LCD Panels and lcdwarn
Hi,
Can anyone tell me where, how or if I can find the alert messages on the LCD panel from an SSH session ?
I've looked at lcdwarn and /etc/alertd/alertd.conf and bigpipe platform, I've also looked through the logs - but I suspect the related messages may only be written to the log at the moment they occur.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
J

Hi,
Alertd is the alert daemon which generates the LCD warnings and/or SNMP traps for specific alerts. syslog-ng is the daemon that writes messages to log files and sends messages to alertd for processing. Generally, whatever syslog sends to alertd is also sent to a log file.
What are you trying to do?

Hi Aaron,
My Datacentre operators report twice daily on the state of led's on our equipment. Often they do not note the LCD messages on our BigIP's.
I was wondering if it was possible to find out what event triggered the led state from an SSH session rather than emailing the Datacentre, waiting for an Operator to get to the BigIP and relay the LCD message. Note, the operators know nothing about how to navigate the LCD, and there are many operators, so its likely you get a different one each time (plus the attrition rate is high).
If it's easier to get the message myself, I'd rather that than face the prospect of trying to train all the operators.

Do i need to restart the alertd process if the Display on lcd is hung and i see a amber light led on the unit.
let me know if it ok to restart the agent. - hoolio

I don't think restarting alertd will have any impact on production traffic handling. It certainly wouldn't if this is the standby unit you're doing it on.

display still says that "unit is going active"... is this hung ? fake message?. - nathe

I don't think that means it's hung - just the last message - you can clear this using the panel (think it's just the X button).
As for the LEDs - here's what I think:
Active Mode
___________
Activity = green or yellow intermittent
Status= green solid
Standby Mode
____________
Activity = green or yellow intermittent
Status= yellow solid
So what you're seeing is the Unit is the Standby one.

Nathan,
to clear that message from panel --> restart alrertd (remotely) ? - nathe

I've remembered its the Green Tick which clears the status messages on the front panel. Unless you do this you can't access any of the menu items.
I've never had the cause to restart the alertd daemon I'm afraid to say (or not I suppose!)

Can you click any of the buttons on the LCD and get a response? As Nathan suggested, you should be able to clear the past messages by clicking the check mark button a few times. If not, I'd try logging into the unit and check the recently modified /var/log/ log files, particularly /var/log/ltm, for errors.
You can find related AskF5.com solutions by search for "LED". Here's one relevant SOL I think Nathan quoted from:
