keep losing connectivity

hi everyone

when i run a constant ping to the external vlan ip address of my big ip unit, it replies a couple of times and then times out for a while, and then replies again, followed by timing out again... over and over

to eliminate any switch problems, i connected a laptop directly to the big ip unit on the same vlan and ran a constant ping which unfortunately returned the same results. i have tried swapping the cable, i have tried using another interface, and i have tried playing around with the speed/duplex, but with no success. the next thing i'm going to try is a crossover cable between the laptop and the big ip unit, and if this works i'll try the crossover cable between the big ip and the switch

do you have any other ideas?

thanks

    Hi Skuba,

It's quite odd that pings from a directly connected laptop would fail intermittently to a self IP address. Do you have the laptop configured on the same subnet as the self IP you're pinging? If you run an unfiltered tcpdump on your client do you see anything when the ICMP fails? Maybe ARP requests failing?

  • hi aaron

i've done some more testing this morning and i'm confident it's a hardware fault. if i configure the same vlan on another big ip unit and connect the laptop running a constant ping it works fine

    cheers

That's what I'd expect. It's just odd if the same issue occurs across multiple ports. Though maybe it's a backplane issue.

Have you been able to run the EUD on the unit?

  • hi aaron

i can still connect fine over the management interface, so i should be able to run the EUD (whatever that is!)

    thanks

  • EUD (End User Diagnostics).

You can find more information here

    https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/releasenotes/related/EUD_B_11_1_0.html

EUD works when you are connected via Console because it boots prior to BIGIP Software.
