The 502 error indicates that you've got a reverse proxy layer in the mix too - like apache or similar. I'd look carefully at how they (it?) is behaving here as well. E.g., do you have anything configured there that could be contributing? Mind you, it may not be a smoking gun but it'll be a good data point to have...
