May 20, 2006iRules and POP3
I'm not sure if this is possible, judging from the documentation I've read I'd say I've got an 50% chance of the folling being doable. I'm thinking of developing an iRule that does the following.
User hits a vip for our POP3 pool, and checks their mail, problem is we have more than enough users that have Outlook set to do this every 60 seconds, which is a waste. I'd like to write an iRule that if "bob" has checked his mail in the last 300 seconds I'm just going to tell him he has no mail on the server. However I can't determine from the documentation I've read if iRules can track information like "time" and content returned accross connections. I need to be able to know the last time "bob" logged in and compare that to the current time and if it is < 300 seconds let him in. Once he's in his client will do a "list" in which case all I need to return is "." after I see the "+OK logged in" prompt. I could see this consuming a ton of ram however if iRules was able to remember when bob last logged in. I get the feeling however that iRules are executed from connection to connection and therefore there would be no where for me to "save" when "bob" last logged in.
Follow? Am I making sense?
Regards,
Paul
