I have a pool with two nodes, and I only want node-b to be use if node-a is down.

Why not just use a "Priority" on the node?
pool my_pool {
lb_mode fastest
min active members 1
member 1.2.3.4:80 priority 2
member 1.2.3.5:80 priority 1
}This will mean that 1.2.3.4:80 will always be the "chosen" node, unless it is down, when 1.2.3.5:80 will be used...
