IPv6 dose not work in Layer 2(bridging) mode

Hi there,

I have an F5 BigIP LTM configured as Layer 2 bridging mode. All working well with IPv4 (load balancing and monitoring). Recently I have enabled IPv6 on the same BigIP and did all the necessary configuration (Self IP, Pool, Virtual Server), however for some reason it’s not working. F5 cannot reach both the server and the firewall. Also the Firewall (which is the gateway of the server) cannot reach it and vice versa.

I have enabled radvd service and it did not solve the problem. I have enabled Layer 2 Multicast forwarding (TM.AllowMulticastL2DestinationTraffic) and it did not work either.

Your comments and feedback will be appreciated.

  • Hi Hamad. Can you clarify a couple things - maybe I can help. You have enabled IPv6 on the LTM, but are using L2 bridging mode? So the BIG-IP is supposed to be transparent for IPv6 - no L3 hop, straight through - correct? The BIG-IP is on a DMZ - protected by the FW - correct? The inside-facing FW interface is the default gateway for the server - because the BIG-IP is supposed to be transparent for IPv6 - also correct? The server is UNIX-based?

Let me know that I understand this correctly. If all this is true, then we can do a little debugging. There could be a config problem on the BIG-IP (maybe not forwarding L2 with IPv6 inside), or the firewall, or the server.
  • Hi

Thanks for help. Following are the answers:

You have enabled IPv6 on the LTM, but are using L2 bridging mode? So the BIG-IP is supposed to be transparent for IPv6 - no L3 hop, straight through - correct?

    Yes correct.

The BIG-IP is on a DMZ - protected by the FW - correct?

    Yes.

The inside-facing FW interface is the default gateway for the server - because the BIG-IP is supposed to be transparent for IPv6 - also correct?

    Yes

    The server is UNIX-based?

    Yes

After doing a lot of debugging, the problem is on the BIG-IP not forwarding L2 with IPv6 inside.

    Thanks

  • Hi Hamad. Did you take this problem to F5? Is it a configuration error or a code problem on their implementation? Have they given you any resolution? I assume it is still not working for you. Is there a workaround you are considering?
  • Hi,

Yes I have opened a case with F5, now almost a month and no answer until now?! All the configuration changes they provided did not help. I even asked them to simulate the same configuration in there lab, but no answer also!

That’s why I raised the issue I am facing here to hopefully get some answers.

    Regards

  • Well that is a bummer. I am interested in the IPv6 functionality, so if you do get a resolution or figure out what is going on I'd apprecaite it if you would post it here. Thanks Hamad.
