Http health nmonitor

I have an http and icmp monitor associated with a pool with only one node and it's constantly up and down (green or red). I removed the icmp and now with only http its still mostly down and I see that its http that is the problem. Users have been complaining as well about not being able to access the site intermittently. I'm not sure what the default http monitor that I'm using is actually monitoring for but since it usually sees it as down I would like to make a custom monitor. How can I make the custom http monitor where a couple of words found on the front page need to be found by the monitor?

btw, if the application is removed from the F5 then there is no problem, only when that vip is created do problems appear. Not sure how it could be a network problem and there are no options changed on the pool or node, all default. Thanks.

  • All you would need to do is set the receive string on your HTTP monitor to match something on the returned page that you would expect to be there if it's available. For example, if the node presents a splash page has text saying "Welcome to My Company, please login below", then you could match on any or all of the text within that string.

The default HTTP monitor that you're using now (with no receive string configured) should report the node up if it receives a response of any kind. If this monitor is failing, it may indicate a larger problem. Either with the communications path in between the BIG-IP and the server, or the server itself.
