How to use APM to check PC files from a data group list

How can I do an APM file check on a list of file from a data-group (rather than hard coding them in the VPE)?

 

I have a list of files in a session variable that was read from the DG by an iRule, and have tried entering %{session.custom.pcfilelist} in the file name box, but this does not work.

 

A secondary issue is that the backslashes in PC file names get mangled - if I enter single backslashes, they disappear. If I enter them as pairs, '\windows\system.ini', they come out as '{ \windows\system.ini }'. Not sure if this is part of the problem or not.
