How to realize reserved bandwith on LTM?

It is a demand for my customer,he want to realize reserved bandwith about LTM. As he has many applications on his BIGIP products. he always found burst traffic during the middle of every month. So, I want to make a solution to help him. But I don't know how to configure LTM or use iRules to complete. In my opinion: There are many virtual servers on our F5 system, it provide many services on internet. We only protect bandwith for some important services.

best regards forward to your reply!

  • The F5 is completely available to you to consume the throughput available by default. If you are doing throttling, it may prevent the complete bandwidth usage for an application or VS. You may be able to reserve some bandwidth per VS if required.

You might want to look into the rateclass functionality of the LTM for this. You'll find it under the acceleration functionality.

Note that the config may get quite involved, depending on your exact requirements and usage of your LTM's.

rateclass profiles can be assigned by iRule, so what I've done in the past is a combination of rateclass and iRUles to assign the correct one to each connection.

    YMMV.

I'd like to add that it's all about control; in your case it's about limiting the bandwidth available to other services so that more importance services can use more.
