How f5 handles when an app is down

Hi, We are using F5 for load balancing and we have 2 instances running. If one of the instance is down, will the f5 server know and route all the requests to the second server? Can anyone explain how...

We have two independent apps running to handle the requests coming on to our server. These requests come to f5 load balancer. I need to understand what will happen if one of the app is down.
