GTM or LTM? VMware View, 2 sites
Hi,
I have two sites connected over a WAN, each hosting an independent VMWare Horizon View environment. Users will always use a desktop in their preferred site unless that site is unavailable.
My question is: if I have a LTM in each site, do I need a GTM in each site as well? What can the GTM do for me the LTM can not?
In VMware's "Always-on-desktop" document (http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/solutions/vmw-alwayson-validated-design-guide.pdf) a third site is used in which a GTM runs. My setup will be quite similar but we only have two sites instead of three. If we need to use a GTM is should be redundant but I think it can be clustered between sites over a WAN.
Regards, Alfred.

Alfred,
You could definitely put a GTM in each of your sites to accomplish this redundancy. It is common for customers to place a GTM in a third site if their external DNS is hosted externally. Sometimes the 2nd backup site is not up and running until an event so putting the GTM in a third hosted site is preferred. You can place the GTMs as needed in your architecture.
The GTM adds the ability to use business logic to determine the DNS answer to the query made by the VMware View Client. The business logic could be geolocation based logic, IP topology based logic, or some other such logic.
I would suggest you refer to the deployment guide here to explore the various multi-site View deployment options… https://devcentral.f5.com/wiki/iapp.VMware-View-iApp-v1-0-0.ashx

Thank you Paul, but what if I don't use a GTM at all? Are LTMs capable of load balancing between sites if each site contains a LTM? What will not function in such an environment?
Regards, Alfred
