Jul 11, 201311.4.0 introduces load-aware failover, so i understand different hardware is supported.
Load-aware failover for Sync-Failover device groups
Prior to failover, the device that the BIG-IP system chooses as the target failover (next-active) device is now based on a combination of device capacity and application traffic load. The BIG-IP system performs continual calculations to determine the device that has the most available resources, based on capacity and traffic load, and then, for each device, identifies its next-active device accordingly. This feature is most useful when the device group contains heterogeneous hardware platforms.Release Note: BIG-IP LTM and TMOS 11.4.0
