F5 LTM with Microsoft RDP

Hello Guys,

We have deployed a Virtual server to provide connections to 2 RDP servers. When users connect to the servers via de virtual server everything works perfectly.

But the problem starts when they are in the session and they want to view youtube for example. The youtube is very choppy and not fluent. If we bypass the F5 and connect to the server directly there is no problem.

I have followed the manual configuration from this guide: https://www.f5.com/pdf/deployment-guides/microsoft-remote-desktop-gateway-dg.pdf

But nothing seems to work properly, so neither the TCP Profile or the persistence profile for the pool seem to improve anything.

Is is there anything i am missing here?

  • Deployed the iApp for Remote Desktop Host and that did not change anything.

    The LTM is based upon a Viprion chassis with 1 CPU assigned, maybe this is to little?

  • doubtful, but it could be. do you have an idea how much traffic is going through the system?

    if you have a support contract be sure to contact them. they can much more easily trouble shoot this with packet captures and such.

  • Still it poses a problem.

    Also noticed that the throughput through the VS is alot lower then when we go to the node itself.

  • We removed the guest traffic profile on the vCMP. This dramatically improved the throughput.

    The guest traffic profile is linked to a Color Policer List;

    This has a Commited Information Rate 10 Gbps and action drop-red. The drop-red seemed to have caused the traffic to be identified as excess and did not allow a good throughput through the F5.
