We have a split dns domain, hosted on an internal only server and externally on a f5 GTM (internet facing).

NimbostratusYou won't need an iRule for this. GTM leverages Topology rules to allow for responding in this fashion.
Configure your topology rules to direct all internal (controlled) ip subnets to the internal DNS, and fallback to the external for all others.
