Apr 12, 2010F5 GTM - LTM communication requirements
Hi Guys ,
Quite new to F5 GTM.
We're looking at a design to enable us to operate in an Active / Active fashion in our geographic DC's , we need to utilise persistance as the solutions from the likes of dyn etc don't provide that.
Currently with have 2 x 6400's LTM deployed in our primary facility in a cluster. 1 x 6400 deployed in our secondary.
Some additional 3900's exist at a newer facility and we're wanting to utilise them to provide the GTM.
We're looking to get trial licences shortly of GTM once out LTM system in online.
My concern is:
The integration with LTM from the newer GTM box's. These are in a completly different network , only communication would be over the WAN. What integration , if any is required ?
From reading around it appears to be iQuery , which i'm presuming is traffic states on the LTM system. Apart from that is any other communication required ?
Thanks
Neil

Hi Neil,
I think you'll need ports 22, 443 and 4353 between all GTM's and each LTM. This is described to some extent in SOL8195:
SOL8195: Overview of the BIG-IP GTM big3d_install, bigip_add, and gtm_add utilities

Hi hoolio ,
Thats great.
Don't suppose you know if we have clustered the 3900's ,with each have access to the same 2 x WAN pipes , can we have the primary acting as 2 nameservers for the same zone.
Reason being , is if we loose the primary WAN pipe we don't want to switch to a standby facility as we have large enough backhaul to pull our WAN accross from the standby facility to the primary facilities F5.
So , NS1.company.com - 1.1.1.1 and NS2.company.com - 2.2.2.2 are actually operating of the same F5 ?
I suppose another stance , is it best to cluster or to use sync groups , but if the LTM part of it is clustered can the GTM be operating in a standalone ?
many thanks

I'll leave that to the GTM architecture gurus around here...
