Dec 17, 2009DNS question - Simple I hope -
I hope this is the right forum to post. I have a quick DNS resolution question in regards to a server behind the load balancer. 99% of our setup I guess is "out of path" which means the gateway of the servers is a router. We have a new host and this hosts gateway is "in path" so this servers gateway is the IP address of the load balance. Since I do not have a local DNS server on my network I need to use the ISP DNS server. It appears I cannot resolve DNS (Public IPs) with the gateway as the load balance. What am I missing?

Hi Matt,
You can configure a 0.0.0.0:53 virtual server enabled only on the VLAN that the DNS clients are on to pass the traffic through LTM. If you have a pool of gateway servers you want to load balance, you could add them to a gateway pool and use a Performance Layer4 VS with a FastL4 profile. If you just want to use the LTM routing table to send the traffic on, you can use a Forwarding IP VS.
You can try searching on AskF5 for phrases like "outbound access" or "virtual server types" for more details. The LTM config guide for your version will also have some useful reference material.
