Sep 21, 2010Data Center Availability Based on GTM Availability
I have two data centers in different states. We have dual ISPs in to both with a GTM in each location. There are LTMs in each location that will be load balacing requests from the Internet. Since I don't want to be responding to DNS requests with an IP that is located in a down data center, I currently have the GTM to GTM traffic is routed out through the Internet in order to detect an ISP/DC failure. That would be sufficient if I could figure out how to get the DC to disable if the GTM is unreachable. If that is not possible, my more complicated solution would be to route all GTM to LTM traffic out through the Internet and have each LTM report their own failure. Any suggestions?

You'll need to make sure that both of the GTMs are in the same sync group (use the gtm_add script) and aware of each other under the "Servers" section of the GTM module. You can find more information about how to accomplish this in the manual: http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_gtm/manuals/product/gtm_config_10_2.html?sr=10222097
After that task has been completed, you'll need to either add the LTMs in the same fashion or manually add the virtuals to pool in question. You'll then configure your WideIP for global availability and you should be good to go.
I would spend some time looking through the manuals as they provide detailed procedures for deploying GTM in your environment. Hope this helps.
Best regards,
George
