Configuring SNMP trap alerts to send an email notification - edit the file user_alert.conf

I logged in to putty and tried to run the command below. In-vain. My present working dir is /common , how can i change my Dir to /config and edit the user alert config files. What is the best way to edit the file.

 

Impact of procedure: Performing the following procedure should not have a negative impact on your system.

 

Log in to the command line. To backup the /config/user_alert.conf file, type the following command: cp /config/user_alert.conf /config/user_alert.conf.SOL3667

 

To modify the permissions on the user_alert.conf file to include write access, type the following command: chmod 644 /config/user_alert.conf

 

Using a text editor, edit the /config/user_alert.conf file to create a custom alert definition according to the following format:

 

application delivery
LTM
TMOS

    Sounds like you don't have advanced shell access for your user account. If you are sitting at a prompt that looks like this...

    root@(bigip17)(cfg-sync Standalone)(Active)(/Common)(tmos)

    ... then you are in the TMOS Shell (TMSH).

    You can try executing the "bash" command at the TMOS prompt. If permitted, this will temporarily drop you into bash where you should then be able to follow the instructions in SOL3667. Or you can change your BIG-IP user account to allow Advanced shell access. Many sites don't allow that though.
