Cannot Communicate on Serial interface!

This may be the wrong place to post this, and if so, please accept my apologies.

Anyhow, here is what I am up against.

I have taken over for another engineer who had racked this BIG-IP 2400 back in 2005. Other than turning on the power, he had done nothing else to set up the device.

Now I have been tasked with getting this thing up and running. I took a F5 LTM course..etc. Now it is time to for me to shine..but ALAS! I cannot for the life of me get the serial interface to communicate with my computer.

Here is what I have tried:

Hyperterminal:

9600/8/N/1/No flow I also tried 19200

I get a couple weird characters when I boot the device.

Same settings for Putty.

I am using standard cisco serial cable with terminal connector.

Thank you for your help!

19200 and 8-N-1 should do it, as should a standard serial cable. Do you have a different cable to try? My memory is fuzzy, but isn't there something a little different about Cisco serial pinouts?

The only other thing I can think of is to make sure you're plugged into the console port and not the one for failover (I do this occasionally).
  • That did the trick! I grabbed an old serial cable from a modem we used to use and changed to 19200. Now I'm able to log in!

I guess this means I have to get to work now.
