Can I failover from one load balancer to another load balancer in another datacentre?
Hello all,
I'd like to know if this is possible. I have a primary data centre and a secondary datacentre, all services are for internal users (no internet users).
I'm thinking I'll have one load balancer in the primary DC and another in the secondary DC, both load balancers will direct traffic to the primary DC most of the time but they can both direct traffic to the secondary DC if needed. Each DC has it's own subnet, we haven't set up BGP, route failover, VRRP or anything like that, we currently just switch DNS CNAMEs to flip from one DC to another.
What I'm after is to be able to publish just one entry point for clients but I also want to protect against one load balancer or site going down without having to revert to manually changing DNS CNAMEs.
I've attached a diagram to try and explain what I'd like to achieve. Is this possible? Would an LTM help me achieve this?
Thanks.

i think of ip anycast/route health injection too. - Stefan_Klotz

I would say this is only possible with stretched VLANs. At least for the network heartbeat, but also for the VIP-range on the BIG-IP.
Alternativly you have to think about a GTM.

Not sure how you would accomplish this with just an HA pair of ltm's but the GTM works great for this. - Leo_D_53884

One issue will be if the MPLS goes down I think both LTMs will be active so you will want to backups to the heartbeat link. - Nick_T_68319

Since you are already using DNS to manage it, a GTM would be a slam dunk.
