BIGIP Traffic Flow

I know this is a simple question but I wanted to verify I understood BIGIP functionality.

 

When a client accesses a VIP (without SNAT), and that VIP calls its pool (in-line configuration). A pool member then needs to access a database not on the F5. At that point is it mandated the connection passes back through the F5 before accessing the DB, or can it go directly to the DB.

 

In my understanding, it must pass back through F5.
