Yes you can run your VM on Workstation. As for other servers, I used the f5 vlab LAMP server as a pool member for a test resource/ldap server/CA Authority.

 

I also used VM's in the cloud platforms (trial versions on AWS, Azure, and GCP) to side step the licensing situation for Windows. I used Windows Servers to lab things I couldn't do on the f5 vlab LAMP server such as RDP/AD/Kerberos/NTLM integration with APM.
