F5 & Omnissa - Updated Deployment Guide and iAPP

With Omnissa ONE right around the corner, we have some exciting news to share.

We have published an updated Omnissa Horizon iApp and accompanying Deployment Guide to help simplify and standardize Omnissa Horizon and Omnissa Access deployments on BIG-IP.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been working behind the scenes to modernize the existing vmware_view_1.5.9 iApp, which has seen little to no updates since 2020. While the original iApp remains functional, it was time for a refresh. This update includes:

  • Updated Omnissa branding throughout
  • Resolution of several known issues
  • Enhanced compatibility with current BIG-IP releases
  • A new feature that is especially important to me: Omnissa Access integration

What Does the iApp Do?

The current release focuses on four common deployment scenarios, with additional use cases planned for future releases:

  1. Omnissa Horizon internal deployments using BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM)
  2. Omnissa Horizon external (DMZ) deployments using Unified Access Gateways (UAG) and BIG-IP (LTM)
  3. Omnissa Horizon with BIG-IP Zero Trust Access (ZTA) integrated with Active Directory
  4. Omnissa Horizon with BIG-IP Zero Trust Access (ZTA) integrated with OAuth and Omnissa Access using JWT tokens

What’s New?

All of the core functionality from the original iApp remains intact, while several enhancements have been added to improve usability, compatibility, and future readiness:

  • Updated VMware references throughout the iApp to align with Omnissa naming conventions
  • Updated APM references to Zero Trust Access (ZTA) terminology
  • Changed the default health monitor from XML to Favicon
  • Added SSL cipher selection options for both client-side and server-side connections
  • Added the ability to disable PCoIP Proxy and HTTP redirection when using ZTA
  • Added support for BIG-IP v21 TLS defaults, including handling of TLS 1.3 enablement. TLS 1.3 remains disabled when using default cipher settings but can be enabled through cipher groups.

Platform Compatibility

This iApp is supported on:

  • BIG-IP 17.1.x
  • BIG-IP 17.5.x
  • BIG-IP 21.x

To ensure reliability and supportability, the iApp is intentionally not backward compatible with unsupported BIG-IP versions.

We hope this updated iApp makes deploying and managing Omnissa Horizon environments easier, more consistent, and better aligned with modern Zero Trust architectures.
