Hi Ed,
You can start with having a look at APM's Network Access (VPN). Network Access can require users to authenticate to AD like you mentioned before providing access to internal resources. It is worth mentioning that APM does not have a web interface for file server access like other products (FirePass, Juniper, etc.)

AdminI would also check out https://university.f5.com and get familiar with the APM classes. That was a big help for me.
