Virtual keyboard for a specific users

Hi,

We have a pre-logon sequence that checks the client's pc for AV and uses the virtual keyboard for their p/w entry. We have one user (high up in the company) who hates the virtual keyboard with a vengance. From my dealing with them it seems it's the small k/b size and the fact it moves each time you select a key. The question I have are

1. Is there any way to exclude one user from having to use the virtual keyboard whilst forcing the other users to use it?

2. Can the size of the virtual keybaord be changed?

3. Can the virtual keyboard be configured to stay in the one place?

Our Firepass is currently running 6.1 with all of the latest updates. Not sure when we will upgrade to 7.0

  • Hi Craig

I agree with the comments about the virtual keyboard, it could be good but it's very hard to use. I'm trying to play with inserting an external logon page to present our own additional authetication but I'm not sure at this stage whether it's going to be possible or not and what it may break in the process

I can't offer any solution to points 1 and 2 but your third point is covered in the FirePass although it's a bit hard to find. Basically when you go into the config screen for your active pre-logon sequence, click on the link in the "show virtual keyboard" action box. Then on the right side iof the screen under where it says inspectors click on either of the links and another window opens which gives you an option to disable the movement across the screen.

  • You can not exclude a single user from a group. What you can do is setup another URI and direct that user to it, then setup a master group so it is on that URI or AD variable for that specific user. It is complicated and would personally not recommended it for a single user solution.

The size of the virtual keyboard can not be changed but the keyboard can be stuck in one place. Mind you, if you have the keyboard in a single place the risk of key logger algorithms detecting the password increases. That is the soul purpose of the pre-logon A/V checks, floating keyboard and so on.

The best bet is to create your own custom webpage and insert a JavaScript keyboard that you can customize.
  • G'day Kevin and Mike,

thanks for the replies. I agree in that the foating keyboard is a nice addition to prevent keyloggers guessing which keys are being clicked, it's just a bugger the keybaord is so small and I think this is their main gripe with it. At least we can fix it in one place if need be. I may have to take Mike's idea about a seperate URI for this user. Not ideal but it may be a compramise they can live with. It's tricky because this person is the IT managers boss and hence can override him if they want to.

Anyway, my problem not yours! Thanks for the suggestions and tips.
