Oct 09, 2014Upgrading from version 11.3 HF8 to 11.5.1 HF 5
We are upgrading our LTMs from 11.3 HF8 to 11.5.1 HF5. Under the "installed images" section in Software Management, there are three boot locations (MD1.1, MD1.2, and MD1.3). If I add the base image f...

Hi MNB, You won't really be upgrading the 10.2 software per say. If you kick off the install from the 11.3.0, it will simply overwrite the 10.2 volume using the 11.3.0 config and the 11.5.0 software. Hope this makes sense. You should end up with:
MD1.1 BIG-IP 11.3.0 2806.0 no complete
MD1.2 BIG-IP 11.3.0 3144.0 yes complete
MD1.3 BIG-IP 11.5.0 0.0.221 no complete

I should probably clarify. I have LTMs on version 11.3HF8, which is what my first question was regarding. Everyone answered my question in that the base image is rolled into the Hotfix and I do not need to install the base image to a separate volume. The second question was regarding a different LTM that has version 10.2 as the active volume. It looks like this: Sys::Software Status Volume Product Version Build Active Status -------------------------------------------------- MD1.1 BIG-IP 10.2.3 112.0 yes complete MD1.2 BIG-IP 11.1.0 1943.0 no complete MD1.3 none none none no complete I am guessing I can make the same changes and just apply 11.5.1 HF5 to MD1.3 and not have to install a base image for 11.5.1 to MD1.1 or MD1.2 in order for 11.5.1 HF5 on MD1.3 to work. Thanks. - boneyardOct 09, 2014

on itself that is correct yes. you do need 11.5.1 and 11.5.1 hotfix on the system, the images that is. not installed, but available. and again 10.2.3 to 11.5.1 is big jump, be careful. - shaggyOct 09, 2014

Note to mnb - the base image is NOT rolled into the Hotfix. If you try to apply a Hotfix to an empty volume, the F5 will automatically install the associated base image IF the base image has been imported into the image list. If the base image is not there, the Hotfix install will hang or error out. So, as boneyard said - you do need 11.5.1 and 11.5.1 hotfix on the system, the images that is. not installed, but available.
