Software Upgrade Plan Question - Relate with cpcfg command

We planning to upgrade our LTM from version 11.6.1 HF1 to 11.6.2 HF1 , we going to follow this below procedure, Do we really need "cpcfg --source=HD1.2 HD1.3" before the upgrade?.

 

Because the reason why asking earlier we had an "loss config" issue after upgrade So, earlier F5 support recommended to use cpcfg command to copy the config to the new boot location before upgrade.

 

I understood this needs to done before upgrade, is this needs to do before reactivate the license as well?

 

Download software version 11.6.2 from F5’s website 1.1Download file from URL ‘https://downloads.f5.com/esd/product.jsp?sw=BIG-IP&pro=big-ip_v11.x&ver=11.6.2’. 1.2Copy image to the directory ‘/shared/images’

 

  1. Backup F5 configuration 2.1System > Archives > Create… 2.2Save file locally by downloading it clicking on the file name and then ‘Download’

     

  2. Re-activate license 3.1System > License > Re-Activate… 3.2Copy dossier 3.3Access website ‘https://activate.f5.com/license/index.jsp’, then go to ‘Activate License’. Paste the dossier and press ‘next’. 3.4Copy the license provided 3.5System > License > Re-Activate.. Paste it into the ‘License’ field 3.6Run the command ‘show system license’ on the TMOS CLI, and verify if the ‘Service Check Date’ is the current date.

     

  3. Install Software 4.1Force device to offline System > High Availability > Redundancy > Force Offline Device Management ›› Devices ›› F5 device Self

     

4.2Verify which Boot Location is inactive. System > Software Management > Boot Locations 4.3Install ISO on the inactive boot location 4.4Change the boot location where the ISO was installed to be active

    Yes cpcfg is needed to copy the configurations to newly created disk volume from old active volume. Execute the command after installing the new image.

     

    License activation will be first step . So cpcfg needs to be done after installing the new image. Thanks, Senthil

      Thanks for your reply but I can't recommendation from F5 support like needs to run this config copy command before upgrade

       

      Here is the recommentation 1. You must run cpcfg command to copy the latest configuration from current volume to new volume before the upgrade, this is needed to copy all the changes which happened on the current volume post the new volume install. SOL14724: Using the cpcfg command to copy a configuration from one boot location to another

       

      1. License re-activation is needed prior installing the new volume. Else the upgrade will fail. https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/7000/700/sol7727.html

      As I know if any config loss issue then needs to run "cpcfg --source=HD1.2 --reboot HD1.3" with reload.

       

      Are you sure needs to be run this config copy "cpcfg --source=HD1.2 HD1.3" after upgrade ?

      I wouldn't run that command if you've already switched into the target volume. I believe it is only required if you run the installation for the new software without rebooting into it immediately, and then make changes that you later need to carry forward into the new installation slot. If you use the cli option 

      reboot
      in the 
      install
      command, it should carry the configuration over.

      Also, if you reboot via the WebUI, and select Yes for "Install Configuration" and specify the source/destination appropriately, it should carry over your config.
