smtps offload possible

I'm looking to configure an smtps offload service (to and from messagelabs if anyone has specific knowledge) and our f5 reseller says that they only use starttls functionality for smtp over tls, and don't just generically connect over a tls session to then provide smtp inside it. As i understand it, these two approaches are both perfectly valid, and also totally seperate from one another. if messagelabs only use the starttls approach, I'm advised that unless there's a funky iRule already somewhere, I'm going to be out of luck. any clues on that front? i saw one guy struggling, and apparently giving up, trying to get it workin on imap, but no sign of anythgin over smtp.
