Feb 12, 2013Serial Terminal Server for console port
Hi,
We have both our 1600 on a remote site outsourced.
This week we had problem to get somebody on site after upgrade problem, with a pc and a serial port.
Is there anybody who have tested a serial to ethernet solution for the console port?
Regards Jan

Hey Jan,
Any kind of console server would work here. A PC using RDP, a real console appliance, a dial up modem. If you want some ideas, give me a shout. - Jan_Rockstedt_4

Hey Jan, it looks OK but I was thinking something along the lines of what you can get from Perle, OpenGear and others. I guess what you chose will depend on your budget and other factors. A quick Google for 'Console Servers' will give you a good idea of what's out there.
If security is of concern this company provide some very secure products with integrated modems etc. if required: http://www.commdevices.co.uk/products.cfm - Jan_Rockstedt_4

Thank Steve,
A hardware device can easly pay, one or two consulats hours at weekend , for us.
But I am wondring if there is any plan from F5, to make some build in to the harware to control the console port?
We will upgrade the F5 hardware in about 6 mounth time.
It would be nice to have a build in system like DRAC that some provider have on servers.

Hi Jan, the 1600 has something called AOM (Always-On Management) which provides access to the serial console via SSH. You can find more about that here:
